Mamajuana Cafe

29 Jul

Mamajuana Cafe, Located in the heart of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. This was my first time visiting so I did´nt know what to expect, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised! Everything tasted fresh and finger licking good.

For appetizer I ordered,  stuffed squid with crab meat on an avocado bed and  crab croquettes . The stuffed squid was my favorite. The squid was tender and flavorful and the crab was just on point, it tasted fresh with just the right amount of seasoning; the avocado was juts the right way to get it all together. The crab croquettes was delicious as well, a generous amount of crab meat perfectly fried. Ceviche was the last appetizer, it was so refreshing and tasted just so fresh and with the right amount of lemon, I just wish it would´ve brought a little more.

The entrées, Shrimp(about 8 or 9 small shrimp) on top of a pigeon peas(or guandules, as dominicans call it) risotto. It tasted great because it was not over seasoned,so the shrimp did not over power the risotto and likewise. I must say I would´ve liked all the shrimps to be properly cleaned because it killed it for me when I found a couple of the shrimp not cleaned. The other dish was fried red snapper stuffed with mofongo (mofongo is a typical dominican dish made of fried green plantains mashed together with pork usually, but has different versions). The snapper was tender with very little bones and a generous amount of mofongo. The red snapper was definitely my favorite entrée.

I was a little disappointed with the dessert options, they had some kind of brownie with ice cream, which after was ordered, then said there was no ice cream so we did not order it. Flan was the other option.

The service itself was very attentive without being annoying or disturbing. The food was hot, fresh and plain delicious. It is a little pricey but I do recommend it if you come to visit. It has a beautiful view of the Plaza España, which I love how it looks at night and it´s cooler, so it´s a plus . They have free wi-fi and clean bathrooms. The A/C was not on and it was a very hot day, we decided to sit outside but wished they had A/C.
